An arrest warrant has been issued for the former mayor of Pattaya and former Minister of Culture of Thailand.

The Criminal Court in corruption and misconduct cases in Rayong province issued an arrest warrant for Itthiphol Khunpluem after he failed to appear before the prosecutor.

Itthiphol is accused of abusing his power in the case involving the issuance of an illegal permit to the company Bali Hai Co Ltd for the construction of a condominium near the base of Pratamnak Hill in Pattaya in 2008 during his tenure as mayor.

The construction of the 53-story condo, "The Waterfront Suites & Residences," began in 2008, but the project later faced numerous complaints alleging that the developer had built the structure taller and closer to the beach than allowed. Additionally, the building obstructed the view of the statue of Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak and the Pattaya Bay from the viewpoint of Pratamnak.

Construction of the condominium was halted in 2014, and a decision to demolish the building was made in 2020. However, technical and legal complexities surrounding the matter have yet to be resolved.

Itthiphol served as the mayor of Pattaya from 2008 to 2016 and also held the position of Minister of Culture from 2019 to 2023.
