Humpback whales in Phuket

Yesterday morning, a humpback whale was spotted in the sea near Phuket Island.

The whale was reported by the captain of a tourist boat traveling from Phuket to Phi Phi. The man managed to capture a video and later provided it to the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), who confirmed that it was indeed a humpback whale.

Humpback whales, or Megaptera novaeangliae, are not considered rare or endangered species, but seeing them in Thailand is nearly impossible. The last recorded sighting of a whale was in 2009 in the Ao Po Bay area of Phuket.

DMCR employees urged caution to anyone who might encounter the whale in the waters near Phuket, the Racha Island area, or Phang Nga Bay in the next 2-3 days.

In such a situation, people are advised to keep a distance from the whale, refrain from trying to feed or swim with it. If possible, it's recommended to note down the date, time, location, and coordinates of the whale's presence.
